Peripheral Nerve Stimulator

A temporary, implantable device that delivers targeted electrical stimulation to injured nerves, providing pain relief that continues even after the device is removed.

What Is a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator

Peripheral nerve stimulation (Sprint System) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the affected area. It is believed the electrical pulses can help relieve irritated nerve tissue even after completion of the 60-day treatment period. Evidence demonstrates that even after completion of the treatment period a majority of the patients report continued pain relief.

Unlike a spinal cord stimulator, which is a permanent implant that modifies pain signals at the spinal cord level, a peripheral nerve stimulator is placed directly near the specific nerve that is causing your pain. The Sprint System is a temporary device designed to be used for up to 60 days and then removed. During those 60 days, the electrical stimulation works to calm the irritated nerve and reset the way it processes pain signals.

What makes this treatment particularly exciting is the evidence that the benefits often outlast the treatment period. Many patients continue to experience significant pain relief even after the device has been removed. This suggests that the stimulation may help "retrain" the nerve and break the cycle of chronic pain, rather than just masking the symptoms while the device is active.

The Sprint System is minimally invasive and does not require a surgical procedure for placement or removal. A thin, flexible lead is placed near the target nerve using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, and a small external pulse generator is worn on the body. After the treatment period, the lead is simply removed in the office.

Who Is This Treatment For

Peripheral nerve stimulation with the Sprint System may be a good option if you have:

  1. Chronic pain from a specific peripheral nerve injury or irritation that has not responded to other treatments
  2. Post-surgical pain that persists around a specific nerve
  3. Shoulder pain, knee pain, or other joint-related pain where a specific nerve has been identified as the source
  4. Pain from nerve injuries related to trauma or repetitive use
  5. A desire to try neurostimulation without committing to a permanent implant

The Sprint System is particularly appealing for patients who want a non-permanent treatment option. Because the device is temporary and does not require surgery, it carries fewer risks and commitments than a permanent implant while still offering meaningful, lasting pain relief.

The Treatment Process

The placement of the Sprint System is a quick, minimally invasive procedure performed in the office. It typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, your doctor will identify the target nerve and advance a thin, flexible lead to a position near it. The lead has a small electrical contact at its tip that will deliver the stimulation. No incision or stitching is required for placement. The lead exits through the skin and connects to a small, lightweight external pulse generator that you wear on your body.

Once the lead is in place, the device is programmed to deliver electrical stimulation at settings customized for your pain. You will be given instructions on how to use the external controller, which allows you to adjust the stimulation level and turn the device on and off.

You will wear the Sprint System for up to 60 days while going about your normal daily activities. During this time, your doctor may adjust the stimulation settings to optimize your pain relief.

At the end of the treatment period, you will return to the office for lead removal. The lead is gently pulled out, and a small bandage is placed over the exit site. No surgery or anesthesia is needed for removal.

Pricing: $$$

Peripheral nerve stimulation with the Sprint System is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare, for appropriate indications. Prior authorization may be required. Because the device is temporary and does not involve a surgical implant, the overall cost is generally lower than permanent neurostimulation options. Our team will verify your insurance coverage and discuss expected costs before the procedure.

Recovery

There is minimal recovery involved with the Sprint System.

After the lead is placed, you can resume most normal activities the same day. You should avoid submerging the lead exit site in water (no swimming, baths, or hot tubs) during the 60-day treatment period, though showers are fine with proper covering.

The external pulse generator is small and lightweight, designed to be worn during daily activities without significant inconvenience. Most patients adapt quickly to wearing the device.

After the lead is removed at the end of the treatment period, the small exit site heals within a few days. There are no activity restrictions after removal.

Results

The Sprint System has demonstrated impressive results, particularly the sustained relief that continues after the device is removed.

During the 60-day treatment period, most patients experience meaningful pain reduction in the targeted area. What sets peripheral nerve stimulation apart from many other treatments is the evidence showing that a majority of patients continue to report significant pain relief even after the device has been taken out. This suggests that the electrical stimulation has a lasting effect on the nerve's ability to process pain.

Studies on the Sprint System have shown that patients report sustained improvements in pain levels, function, and quality of life at follow-up appointments well beyond the treatment period.

For patients who do not experience adequate relief during the trial, the lead is simply removed with no permanent changes to the body. This makes it a low-risk, high-reward treatment option.

What to Know Before Your Treatment

Here is what to keep in mind before starting peripheral nerve stimulation:

Temporary device: The Sprint System is designed to be worn for up to 60 days and then removed. It is not a permanent implant.

Skin care: You will need to keep the lead exit site clean and dry during the treatment period. Your doctor will provide detailed wound care instructions.

Daily life: The external generator is small and designed to be unobtrusive. Most patients are able to work, exercise (with some modifications), and go about their normal routine while wearing the device.

Medications: Inform your doctor about all medications, including blood thinners. Adjustments may be needed before lead placement.

Allergies: Report any allergies to adhesives, metals, or anesthetics.

Follow-up: Plan to keep follow-up appointments during the 60-day period so your doctor can monitor your progress and adjust the stimulation settings as needed.

MRI: You will not be able to have an MRI while the Sprint System is in place. If you need an MRI during the treatment period, discuss the timing with your doctor.

Why Choose Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

Relief That Outlasts the Device

Evidence shows that a majority of patients continue to experience significant pain relief even after the Sprint System is removed, suggesting the stimulation helps reset how the nerve processes pain.

No Permanent Implant

The Sprint System is fully temporary. There is nothing left in your body after the treatment period, making it a low-risk option for patients who want to try neurostimulation without long-term commitment.

Targeted to Your Nerve

Unlike spinal cord stimulators that work at the spinal cord level, the Sprint System is placed directly next to the specific peripheral nerve causing your pain. This targeted approach means the stimulation reaches exactly where it is needed.

Keep Living Your Life

The Sprint System is designed to fit into your daily routine. The external generator is lightweight and discreet, and most patients are able to work, exercise, and carry on with their normal activities throughout the 60-day treatment period.
